The political blogger recently hired by the Washington Redskins to help the team defend its nickname has resigned due to pressure he was receiving from outside sources.

Ben Tribbett, a veteran Virginia political blogger, said he resigned because he’d been the target of personal political attacks.

“I don’t want to be a distraction to the team as the political attacks have shifted towards being personal towards me,” Tribbett tweeted. “So I’m going to send in my resignation to the Redskins. Hopefully that allows the debate to move back to where it should be.”

Whatever the reason for Tribbet’s resignation, it’s another embarrassing blow to the team’s owner, Dan Snyder, and his misguided attempt to retain an offensive racist nickname for his franchise.
